The Makers Art Residency: An Outlet for Creative Expression

My name is Tanner Ruffin, I am a second semester sophomore, a psychology major, and a film photographer. I entered the ECU Makers program as little more than a hobbyist. I began taking photos about a year ago using a film camera that I bought from a thrift store. Upon applying to the Makers program, I had very little confidence in my abilities. Despite my lack of experience, I found the program especially attractive due to its emphasis on providing creatively inclined non-art majors an outlet to express themselves.

The ECU Makers program has been instrumental in developing my hobby into a passion. One year ago I never would have imagined that I was capable of producing the work that I have created for Makers; the program has truly brought the best out of me. I am close to completing my final project, a photographic contemplation on deconstruction in urban areas, and could not be more content with the ways in which this program has challenged me. I believe my experience with the ECU Makers program illustrates one of the program’s best characteristics, its focus on accessibility. Regardless of major, regardless of experience level, the Makers program accepts those with an open mind and the desire to make. Whether you’re a seasoned painter or a freshman with a second hand camera, the Makers program will build on your strengths, challenge your weaknesses, and make you more passionate about your craft than you thought possible.
