Participate in the May 2020 ABE in Puerto Rico

May 2020 Global ABE – Service in Puerto Rico (May 9-16)

Applications due February 16

Alternative Break Experiences (ABE) are short-term immersion experiences offered during fall, spring, and summer breaks that focus on specific topics like service, leadership and cultural exploration, and strive to address a variety of social causes with communities stretching across six states and around the world. This ABE will focus on hurricane relief and interact with themes of land rights, environmental justice, Puerto Rico-US relationships, social change, democratic citizenship, leadership, and international development. This program will include re-building mangrove forests that were destroyed by Hurricane Maria. Participants will engage in service relating to human and environmental needs. The main community partner organization will be Caras, an organization that focuses on: (1) working on developing different mechanisms to introduce seed germination of red mangroves and mangrove restoration and (2) after school programs in vulnerable communities around San Juan including the community of Vietnam.
