Diversity Events - February 2020

Feb. 6 – “The Defamation Experience.” A unique interactive diversity program comprised of three components; the play which explores the highly charged issues of race, class, religion, gender, and the law with a twist: the audience is the jury. Through deliberations and post show discussions, audiences engage in civil discourse that challenges preconceived notions. #ShadesOfCommunity | 6pm, Black Box Theater, MCSC

 

Feb. 7 – Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The 2020 theme is “We’re in This, Together.” This observance is an opportunity to increase HIV education, testing, community involvement, and treatment among black communities. | 11am-2pm, Ledonia Wright Cultural Center.

 

Feb. 7 – Feminist Friday. Join Women and Gender Office for a variety of discussion topics such as gender, current events and supporting one another. Free snacks, coffee or hot chocolate! All gender identities and expressions are welcome and encouraged to participate! | 2pm-3pm, Women and Gender Office, MCSC

 

Feb. 8 – Rise Up: Pathways to Diversity in Medicine Conference. This event will provide tools and encouragement for youth from diverse backgrounds that will assist them to RISE Up to their potential in medicine. Sessions are available for elementary, middle, and high school students as well as for students attending community college, college and graduate school students. Hosted by the Brody School of Medicine, Office of Diversity Affairs. Registration required. | 9am-3pm, Health Sciences Campus

 

Feb. 8 – Safe Zone Training for K-12 Educators. Safe Zone Training for K-12 educators, administrators, counselors, parents, and future teachers. General CEUs (0.40) for educators will be issued at the completion of the workshop. This training is an opportunity for people to talk, learn, and ask questions about sexuality and gender in a non-judgmental, safe, educational environment. Feb. 9 – 2020 Greenville Chinese New Year Celebration. The celebration will consist of three consecutive parts: various cultural activities in the lobby; performance party in the recital hall; buffet dinner at ECU West End Dining Hall. Both the cultural activities and performances are free and open to the public. This event is co-sponsored by the Greenville Chinese School, ECU Chinese Student and Scholar Association, Chinese Association of ECU Faculty, Staff and Friends, Greenville Chinese Christian Fellowship, and ECU Office of Equity and Diversity. | 3pm-7pm, ECU Fletcher Hall Music Center

 

Feb. 10 – “The Revival: Women and the Word.” Presented as part of the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center’s Spring 2020 Queer Film Series, join us for a screening of “The Revival: Women and the World,” in celebration of Black History Month. Free and open to the public. | 7pm, Black Box Theater, MCSC

 

Feb. 10 – Barbershop Talks. This leadership series helps male identified students from underrepresented backgrounds connect and share experiences. Seeking to mirror the realism experienced in a traditional barbershop, it provides a place for conversation and dialogue about the challenges and resources available to males of color. This is a recurring series hosted every other Monday. | 6pm-7pm, LWCC.

 

Feb. 13 – “Love is Love: A Vision of Love for All.” Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a vision of love for all.  Stop by the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center and share your support of this vision!  Free t-shirts and other goodies. | 10am-2pm, Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center

 

Feb. 17-March 17 – Food Drive hosted by the BSOM Vice Chairs for Diversity and Inclusion. The Medical Food Pantry, located at Vidant Medical Center, provides emergency healing shelf-stable foods to patients of Vidant Health and ECU Physicians who are food insecure. You can assist us in helping these patients because the type of food they eat makes a difference in their healing. | Drop-off between 8am-5pm in Brody 1N-16.

 

Feb. 18 – NCivility Summit. This event provides opportunities for participants to engage in conversations about civility and how it intersects with topics such as activism, race, politics, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and global affairs. The over-arching goal of the event is for these conversations to fuel participants’ desires to make changes in themselves which would aid their work in becoming positive change agents. | 5pm, MCSC, Room 249

 

Feb. 19 – Nyle DiMarco, “Living Out Loud.” Nyle DiMarco is a deaf activist and an out queer man. Nyle shares his barrier-breaking story as a deaf man who has risen above stereotypes to take the world by storm. His message isn’t only for the LGBTQ+ or the deaf community. His message is for anyone struggling with who they are. Free and open to the public. | 7pm, Main Campus Student Center, Ballrooms

 

Feb. 24 – “Breaking Waves,” A Conversation with Schuyler Bailor. In support of My Pirate Body Week, we are excited to feature “Breaking Waves: A Conversation with Schuyler Bailar.” Schuyler is the first trans athlete to compete in a NCAA Division 1 Men’s Team and a celebrated advocate for inclusion, body positivity, and mental health awareness. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to join us for a catered lunch, meet and greet, and remarks by Schuyler. | Noon, MCSC, Room 249

 

Feb. 25 – Reel Talk: “See You Yesterday.” As two teen prodigies try to master the art of time travel, a tragic police shooting sends them on a series of dangerous trips to the past. | 6pm, LWCC, MCSC, 1st Floor

 

Feb. 27 – Yamato: The Drummers of Japan. With mystical drums, Yamato will stir your soul in this fully produced spectacle. | 7:30pm-9:30pm, Wright Auditorium.
