The EC Scholars Selection process involves nearly 90 ECU faculty and multiple rounds of review. Finalists were selected from just under 700 applications. Nearly 200 semi-finalists moved on to the second review committee and of these, 50 candidates have been selected as finalists for next class of EC Scholars.

This year’s finalists represent three states, 19 North Carolina counties and 41 high schools. There are 18 different majors, as well as four first-generation college students. Several have won awards and competitions, such as Ms. Teen India International, Tennis State Champion, Presidential Volunteer Service Award, and Woman of the Year in Tech.

Among our finalists are tai kwon do and karate black belts, Duke clinical researchers, cancer cell researchers, founders of nonprofits and tech start-ups, and National Merit Commended Scholars. There are also several artists, ballerinas, poets, and musicians.

The finalists will visit ECU’s campus on Sunday, February 16 for Selection Sunday. During the day, they will take part in various activities such as finalist interviews, a student showcase and panel discussion. They will also learn more about the EC Scholars program from current students, including Skype sessions with Scholars who studying abroad this semester. All finalists are also invited to a reception with Interim Chancellor Ron Mitchelson and other ECU officials.
