Resources (3/23 Update)

Honors College Community,

Although the past few weeks have been filled with a lot of changes, the Honors College is still a community and we want to stay connected to you.

To do this, I am sending Honors College update emails every Monday and Thursday. These emails will cover a variety of topics including college updates on virtual senior celebrations, ways to stay connected with us and the rest of the Honors community, resources for your telelearning, and tips on managing stress and anxiety during this pandemic. If there are additional things you would like to see in these updates, please reach out to me at martinkr19@ecu.edu.

Since today is your first (virtual) day back in class, we wanted to share some resources that are being offered campus wide:

  • Career Services is offering a full range of services virtually. Learn more in this Career Services Resources post.
  • The Speech Communications Center is open online. Learn more in this SCC post.
  • The Counseling Center is offering virtual appointments.
  • The Pirate Academic Success Center will provide all of their services online. Learn more.
  • Student Health Services will continue to be available for students with urgent medical needs.
  • If you need learning accommodations, visit the Department for Disability Support Services website.
  • The Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center is offering many of their campus events online such as Coffee House and Queer and Trans People of Color meetings.
  • ECU has created an Online Tips website with info on being successful while learning online.
  • If you’re having technical issues, visit the Pirate Techs Computer Support Center website for assistance.
  • More resources for transitioning to online instruction can be found in the resources and support memo that Provost Hayes sent earlier today. This includes information on the Virtual Computing Lab, University Writing Center and available online tools.
  • The university has also released an emergency grading and academic record notation for spring 2020.

Notes specifically for Honors College students:

  • Seniors, you will be able to get your medallions. Further instruction about medallions and senior celebrations will be sent out shortly.
  • The Honors College has waived the 2 presentation requirements for Spring 2020 graduating seniors due to the move to distance education and campus accessibility. If you do present virtually, let us know so we have a record of it.
  • Although the face-to-face portion of RCAW has been canceled, you can present online. Fill out this survey by today.

As we all practice social distancing, ensuring that you exercise physically and mentally. If you’re not in actual quarantine, you can go for a walk or run outside. There are also a variety of free exercise classes on YouTube that can be done with minimal to no equipment in your home. One of my personal favorites is Yoga with Adriene.

Meditation is one way you can exercise mentally. Practicing meditation helps keep your mind calm and clear, decreases stress and anxiety, and positively impacts your physical and mental health. If you’re completely new to meditation, the New York Times has created a “How to Meditate” guide.

Also, know that all of us in the Honors College are here to support you. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns or if you just need someone to talk to you.
