Pledge to ACT Against Racism and Racial Injustice

Will you stand with us and take action against racial inequity and systemic racism?

The Pledge to ACT Against Racism and Injustice invites individuals in our community to commit to working for social, cultural, and structural change.

The Pledge to ACT Against Racism and Injustice

I believe that…

Racism, discrimination, and injustice are real.

Words, behaviors, practices, policies, and systems can all contribute to racial and social injustice.

The impact of my words, actions, and policies is more important than the intent behind them.

Creating, valuing, and protecting spaces for people of color is critical.

I commit to ACT. In my span of influence, I will…

EDUCATE myself about race, racism, discrimination, injustice, and privilege.

EXAMINE my own words, behaviors and practices and to seek to change my actions that are racist or unjust.

REVIEW policies, practices, and systems for inequities and take steps to improve them.

ENGAGE in conversations about race, racism, and injustice and practice active listening across difference.

CHALLENGE preconceived notions and bias to seek understanding and growth.

SUPPORT racial equity efforts with my time, energy, money, and/or privilege.

PREPARE students with the knowledge, skills, and values to live, learn, and work in a global, multicultural society by actively practicing and educating about anti-racism and social justice.

ENSURE that managers and supervisors are trained to use anti-racist leadership frameworks to promote equity and inclusion in their units.

If you agree with these beliefs and you, too, are committed to ACT against racism and injustice, we invite you to sign the Pledge, here: https://oed.ecu.edu/stand-with-oed/.  A list of resources and examples of active steps you can take are available on the Pledge website.
