Cupola Conversations - August 12, 2020, 4PM - "Decision 2020: Civil Discourse in the Classroom"
Following a very successful summer of hosting virtual Cupola Conversations, ECU opens the fall semester with the first of several programs that will prepare our campus for the upcoming November elections.
The entire fall series of Cupola Conversations will be branded with Decision 2020, but each program will have a unique perspective. This first installment, on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at 4:00 pm, is called “Decision 2020: Civil Discourse in the Classroom.”
The panelists are:
- Grant Hayes
ECU Provost / Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs - Caleb Gass
ECU Student / Turning Point USA Chapter President - Eboni Baugh
ECU Associate Professor – Human Development and Family Science - Leslie Garvin
Executive Director – North Carolina Campus Compact
Throughout the summer ECU helped start many conversations related to systemic racism, police brutality, and inequity. As we return for the fall semester, these crucial conversations must continue.
Some faculty have expressed concerns about discussing current events, social injustice and politics in the classroom. Others don’t feel like they are experts and shouldn’t broach the subject during class time. However, these topics are weighing heavily on our students who want to engage in dialogue even if those conversations are uncomfortable.
On August 12 at 4:00 pm click this link to join this special Cupola Conversation.
This will be open to the entire campus as well as the general public, and participants will be able to type in questions as part of the conversation. (Note: Not all questions and comments will be included in the program).
