Fall 2020 Semester Changes

Honors College students,

In an effort to keep you up-to-date, here is the latest update on housing, dining, using Mamie Jenkins, tuition/academics, withdrawing and important resources. Housing:

Students who live in residence halls have two options:

  1. Move out of the residence hall completely between Aug. 23-30, OR
  2. Apply for an exception to remain in the residence hall (majority of exceptions will be approved)

Information on spring housing will be sent out via email in early November. Campus Living will attempt to honor roommate requests and reconstruct living-learning communities. Right now, the freshmen residency requirement remains in place during the spring semester for students who select to take face to face classes.

Exceptions:

Students who wish to remain on campus must fill out the exception form by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26.

There is no guarantee that you will remain in your current room or in Gateway.

Students living on campus will be placed in a single room at no additional charge.

After the August 30 move out date, it will take Campus Living one full week to verify spaces are empty, clean rooms, reassign keys and reassign students to their new, single room. The intention is for students to move into their new rooms during Labor Day weekend.

COVID testing will be done on students who are remaining on campus after the August 30th deadline so that test results will be available before moving into their new rooms.

Refunds:

Refund information related to housing and dining will be sent out this week to student emails.

To receive a prorated refund, you must return your key and fob when you move out on or before August 30. Your refund will not be processed until the key and fob are received.

Dining:

Dining options will be available to students who remain on campus.

Prorated refunds will be provided to students who move off campus.

Using Mamie Jenkins:

Mamie Jenkins remains open at this time. You can access the building Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. We do ask that you observe cleaning and social distancing protocols when you come into the building. Remember to:

  • Wear face masks
  • Occupancy limited to 10 people.
  • Clean and sanitize any areas you use (desks, computers, printers, etc.) with provided cleaner.

Tuition/Academics

Additional information about tuition and financial aid is forthcoming. Monitor your email closely. Go to https://go.ecu.edu/coronavirus for updates.

The A-F grading scale remains in place at this time.

Please note: According to the UNC system, “tuition and fees charged for the 2020-21 academic year will remain in place and shall not be refunded by any institution regardless of any changes in instructional format that may occur for any part of the 2020-21 academic year.”

The Pirate Academic Success Center is fully operational and offers free tutoring and study skills sessions. Students can email tutoring@ecu.edu to receive PASC services. Withdrawing:

For the fall semester, the university has extended the deadline for withdrawal from academic courses without financial penalty for the first 8-week block of classes to 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28. The last day for withdrawal without financial penalty for 15-week courses remains Sept. 4.

Students who withdraw from the fall semester this week will register for spring classes by working directly with their advisor. They do not reapply to ECU for the spring but do need to send ECU an official transcript to get awarded credit they may take at a community college during the fall term.

Students who decide not to return in the spring will be deactivated by the registrar’s office and would need to reapply to ECU if they want to return in the summer or fall 2021.

The Counseling Center, 252-328-6661, is available for virtual appointments; Student Health Services is available at 252-328-6841 and gotquestions@ecu.edu; and the Dean of Students Office is available at 252-328-9297. The Call Center, 252-737-5100, will be open starting Monday, Aug. 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will operate until Aug. 28.
