Oct. 5-9 – National Coming Out Day Celebrations

  • Oct. 5 – Stop by ECU’s Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center on main campus this week to pick up a Pride flag, or a Pride t-shirt to celebrate National Coming Out Day! Please wear your masks if visiting the center in-person.
  • Oct. 8 – The ECU Health Sciences Campus will share and hear coming out stories in celebration of this national day of importance. This event is hosted by the Health Sciences Sexual and Gender Diversity Committee (SGDC). | Noon, register on Engage to receive a WebEx link.

 

Oct. 5-30 – SNMA’s Canned Food Drive. The Brody Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is hosting a canned food drive through the month of October for Obesity Awareness Month to secure donations for the local food banks in partnership with the Brody Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA). The collection bin will be in the lobby across from the reception desk at the Brody School of Medicine starting October 5th.

Oct. 6 – What’s the Tea? What’s the Tea? is a weekly series that encourages civil discourse on various hot topics within society. Participants are encouraged to share their different perspectives at the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center, a safe place for all Pirates. Oct. 6 – Queer Film Series: “Intersexion.” In this groundbreaking documentary, intersex individuals reveal the secrets of their unconventional lives – and how they have navigated their way through the strictly male/female world when they fit somewhere in between. Presented by the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center in celebration of Intersex Awareness Month. | 6pm, register on Engage to receive WebEx and Kanopy links; OR visit in-person to attend the show. Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28 – My Culture is Not a Costume. Come out and express why your culture is not a costume every Wednesday in October and the last Tuesday. | Noon, Instagram @lwcc_ecu. Shirts may be picked up at the LWCC gallery. Please wear your masks.

Oct. 7 – Votes for Women: A Celebration. Join the Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement and the Women & Gender Office for a virtual celebration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment with special guest Dianna Wynn, president of the League of Women Voters of Wake County, and clips from the HBO film “Iron Jawed Angels.” | 3pm, register on Engage to receive a Microsoft Teams link.

Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28 – Coffee House Group. Coffee House Group is an informal weekly psychoeducational and social gathering for students hosted by the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center. Through group discussion and engaging activities, weekly meetings aim to build community while learning about topics impacting LGBTQ students and allies in a safe and supportive environment. The group covers topics such as identity development, intersectionality, relationship success, and healthy habits. | 6pm, register on Engage to receive WebEx link.

Oct. 9 – Medical School and Residency Financial Literacy Webinar. Are you medical student? Then join “I Am First” on October 9 at 5pm via WebEx for a talk on financial literacy while in medical school and beyond. Oct. 12 – Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Join the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center and Office for Equity and Diversity for the Second Annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day where we will have artist Senora Lynch virtually lead participants through the creation of an art piece and watch local artist Charly Lowry perform online. | 1pm and 6pm, register on Engage to receive WebEx link.

Oct. 14 – “Minority, Public, and Rural Health Disparities – A Virtual Roundtable.” October brings Global Diversity Awareness Month to remind us of the positive impact a diverse workforce of men and women can have on a society. More and more, the world becomes a place where cultures and customs come together, and we are uncertain what is appropriate. Oct. 14 – ODA Book Club Chat: “Identity & Medicine (I-AM).” A “Coffee & Book Club Chat” focused on a series of different book discussions about the perspectives of diverse journeys to a career in medicine. In honor of September 15-October 15 being Latinx Heritage Month, book club members will read and discuss the book: “Becoming Dr. Q: My Journey from Migrant Farm Worker to Brain Surgeon.” Interested students are encouraged to read the selected book during this month. | 5pm, RSVP to bsomdiversity@ecu.edu to receive a link to purchase the book and to RSVP to the book club discussion.

Oct. 15 – Skills for Bridging the Divide. Hosted by Intercultural Affairs and the Office for Equity and Diversity, Braver Angels will facilitate this workshop that teaches skills for having respectful conversations that clarify differences, search for common ground, and affirm the importance of the relationship. This is a safe environment for participants to practice those skills. | 3pm, register in Cornerstone to receive the Zoom link.

Oct. 15 – Coming Out Stories. The Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center and the Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) invite you to Coming Out Stories. In sharing our stories, we create community and strengthen the ties that bind us. | 6pm, register on Engageto receive WebEx link.

Oct. 19, Nov. 2, Nov. 16 – “The Privileged Poor” Faculty Virtual Book Club. Participants will discuss the book “The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges Are Failing Disadvantaged Students” by Anthony Abraham Jack in a 3-part discussion. This book reveals how–and why–disadvantaged students struggle at elite colleges and explains what schools can do differently if these students are to thrive. Participants who register by Sept. 30 will receive a free copy of the book and must commit to participating in all three book club sessions. Oct. 22 – Virtual Diversity Seminar: Examining Disability Identity, Race, and Gender as a Pathway to Inclusive Accessibility. Oct. 26 – Intersex Awareness Day. Join the presenters with the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center virtually in exploring asexuality and learn more about the umbrella term that describes people who identify as asexual, gray-asexual, and demisexual. Join us as we commemorate the internationally observed awareness day highlighting human rights issues faced by intersex people and amplifying intersex voices. Oct. 26 – SNMA’s Physician Speed Dating. Join the Brody School of Medicine’s Student National Medical Association (SNMA) for Speed Mentoring: a minority physician mixer with a speed dating twist that allows you to network with physicians from varying specialties. Oct. 27 – SNMA’s Diversity in Medicine Webinar. During this webinar, attendees will gain historical knowledge on diversity topics in the medical field and understand the current issues regarding diversity in medical education and the role of the SNMA today, as presented by Dr. Jabbar Bennett, PhD. This event is hosted by the Brody School of Medicine’s Student National Medical Association (SNMA). | Noon-1pm via WebEx.

 

Oct. 28 – “SGDC’s Lunch and Learn.” Participants will watch and discuss an Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Diversity 3.0 series video: “Enhancing Institutional Culture and Climate for LGBT and DSD Populations.” This virtual event ishosted by the Health Sciences Sexual and Gender Diversity Committee (SGDC) in collaboration with the Vice Chairs for Diversity and Inclusion (VCDI). | Noon, register on Engage to receive a WebEx link.
