February (ongoing) – The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) at the Brody School of Medicine is currently selling custom masks! Feb. 1 – “All Black Lives Matter” Art Exhibit Opening Reception. The Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center created an art installation featuring the work of ECU student artists Breana Miller, Tiana Robinson, and Wesley Hollingsworth, which was originally fashioned from a Los Angeles, CA mural. Their work gives a voice to some of ECU’s black, queer students in a way that we hope inspires connection and reflection. We invite you to join us for a virtual opening reception and conversation with the artists, as well as allotted time for questions about what this art means to them. | 5:30pm-6:30pm, register on Engage to receive WebEx link.
Feb. 3 – Career Preparation Series for International Students: Optional Practical Training & Curricular Practical Training. Hosted by the Office of Global Affairs. | 3pm-4pm, WebEx.
Feb. 3, 10, 17 – Coffee House Group. Coffee House Group is an informal weekly psychoeducational and virtual social gathering for students hosted by the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center. Through group discussion and engaging activities, weekly meetings aim to build community while learning about topics impacting LGBTQ students and allies in a safe and supportive environment. The group covers topics such as identity development, intersectionality, relationship success, and healthy habits. Open to ECU students only. Feb. 8 – National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Stop by the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center (LWCC) for FREE & CONFIDENTIAL HIV tests and information. All students, faculty and staff are invited! Feb. 8, 22 – Women of Color (WOC) Virtual Book Club. Join us for the women of color book club. This semester the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center (LWCC) and the ECU Women and Gender Office is reading the novel “Clap When You Land” by Elizabeth Acevedo. Spaces are limited. Feb. 8 – Queer Film Series: Kiki (In-Person Event). A new generation of LGBTQ youth have formed an artistic activist subculture, named the Kiki Scene. This film will be presented by ECU’s Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center in celebration of Black History Month. Free and open to the public. Attendance is limited and social distancing procedures will be observed. Masks are required. | 6pm-7pm @ Main Campus Student Center, RSVP on Engage (this is an in-person event).
Feb. 9 – “The Privileged Poor” Faculty Virtual Book Club. Participants will discuss the book “The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges Are Failing Disadvantaged Students” by Anthony Abraham Jack in a 3-part discussion. This book reveals how–and why–disadvantaged students struggle at elite colleges and explains what schools can do differently if these students are to thrive. Feb. 11 – Galentine’s Day. Want to celebrate healthy feminine friendships? Join the Women and Gender Office for the annual Galentine’s Day Celebration! Students, faculty, and staff who identify as women or non-binary are invited to reject false narratives about feminine friendship by participating in the annual Galentine’s Day activities. Feb. 12 – Love Is Love: A Vision of Love for All. Celebrate Valentine’s Day with the ECU Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center by supporting a Vision of Love for All. Feb. 15 – Diversity Dialogue Series: Dating – Preference or Racism. Join us for February’s Diversity Dialogue Series as we explore the intricacies of preference in dating and where the line is from preference to racism. | 3pm-4pm, register on Engage to receive a WebEx link.
Feb. 17 – Reel Talk: One Night in Miami. One Night in Miami is a fictional account of one incredible night where icons Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown gathered to discuss their roles in the civil rights movement and cultural upheaval of the 1960s. Join us for a discussion about the impact of film and television on society while exploring various social inequalities. | 6pm-8:30pm, register on Engage to receive a Zoom link.
Feb. 19 – A Brody School of Medicine Event: “The Color of Birth: Disparities, Progress & the Struggle to Be Heard.” Drs. Hellen Ransom, Kerianne Crockett, Karlene Cunningham, and Ifeanyi Walson invite you to join this speaking event that is sponsored by the Vice Chairs for Diversity and Inclusion (VCDI) at Brody. Feb. 22 – “Undoing Implicit Bias in Clinical Settings: A Discussion of Real Experiences & Possible Solutions.” Drs. Tambetta Ojong and Jerrell Sims are the Guest Presenters for this discussion that is being hosted by the Brody School of Medicine Office of Diversity Affairs (ODA), and moderated by Drs. Feb. 22, 23, 24 – Black Men in White Coats Film Screening and a Live Panel Discussion. Fed up with the lack of diversity among doctors, a medical doctor sets out to explore why only 2% of American doctors are black men and what that means for society. The Black Men in White Coats Film debut is being brought to you by the Office of Diversity Affairs at the Brody School of Medicine. We invite you to join us for a live panel discussion with the film’s Executive Producer and Founder of Black Men in White Coats, Dr. Dale Okorodudu, and other guest panelists. Feb. 23 – Black History Month: Michael Bonner Presents a Virtual Keynote on “Improving Performance through Metacognition.” Michael Bonner is from eastern North Carolina and began his career in education seven years ago at South Greenville Elementary School. He is currently a 4th grade social studies teacher, and a 6th grade reading teacher at the Ron Clark Academy. In this keynote, Michael Bonner breaks down important principles of environment and culture; the importance of purposeful collaboration; and how self-development can create a higher level of performance. | 6pm-7:30pm, register in Cornerstone to receive a Zoom link, or contact the ECU Office of Equity and Diversity for more information.

Feb. 25 – Healing Space. Healing Space is a program created for students of color to discuss racial trauma and the effects of microaggressions. These monthly sessions are hosted by the ECU Ledonia Wright Cultural Center (LWCC). | 3pm-4pm, register on Engage to receive a virtual link.
Feb. 25 – Manhood Monday’s Present: Poetry Slam. Join the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center for a virtual poetry slam focused on social justice and equality.
