ECU Diversity Events - March 2021
March 1 – “To Survive this Shore” Opening Reception with the Peel LGBTQ Center. Photographs and Interviews with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Older Adults: A Project by Jess T. Dugan and Vanessa Fabbre. | 5:30pm-6:30pm, MCSC Student Center Gallery. Register on Engage.
March 2 – The Homage Exhibit. Hosted by the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center, the exhibit opens the door to the African American experience in the United States from the time of slavery to the election of Barack Obama, including original historical documents, artwork, newspapers, press photos, letters, books and more. March 2, 9, 16, 23 – What’s the Tea? A weekly discussion group with the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center where the topics range based upon current events, news stories, or participant suggestions. March 3, 17 – Queer and Trans People of Color (QTPOC). QTPOC offers a virtual opportunity with the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center and PEEL LGBTQ Center to build community and explore the issues impacting students at the intersections of race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender. We welcome anyone who identifies as African American, Latino/a/x, Indigenous, Asian American, Native American, multiracial, and LGBTQ+ to attend our bi-weekly meetings. | 4pm-5pm, Register on Engage to receive Zoom link.
March 3 – COVID Vaccination Panel: Safety, Efficacy, & Equity. Join the ECU Intercultural Affairs Office and their distinguished panel of public health experts and researchers for an engaging discussion examining the COVID-19 vaccine. March 9 – “The Privileged Poor” Faculty Virtual Book Club. Participants will discuss the book “The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges Are Failing Disadvantaged Students” by Anthony Abraham Jack in a 3-part discussion. This book reveals how–and why–disadvantaged students struggle at elite colleges and explains what schools can do differently if these students are to thrive. March 9 – Women’s Herstory Month & International Women’s Day Keynote: Anti-Racist Feminism is the Medicine for Our Survival. In this keynote, Lutze Segu will talk about why, if we want to survive as a species, we must have an anti-racist feminist lens that is intersectional. There is no future on this planet without gender liberation. March 9 – Grad PIRATE Talks: Building Supports for Undocumented Students. This graduate student presentation combines the information learned from interviews with undocumented students as well as recommendations from literature and organizations to promote access to college and multiple means of supporting this group of students. | 6pm-7pm. March 10 – A.L.A.N.A Workshop Series: Surviving vs Thriving. The A.L.A.N.A. Workshop Series provides academic and professional development initiatives and is geared towards helping students from underrepresented backgrounds and/or first-generation students get acclimated to the ECU campus and beyond. March 23 – “Supporting the LGBTQ+ Community in Mental Health & Suicide Prevention.” Join the Health Sciences Sexual and Gender Diversity Committee (SGDC) for a guest presentation with Dana Cea, PhD Candidate in Rehabilitation Counseling & Administration with the Department of Addictions and Rehabilitation Studies. Following the presentation, Dana and other providers with the College of Allied Health Sciences Navigate Counseling Clinic will offer a virtual mental health check-in with any participant who is interested. March 24 – We Gather. Join others for an intimate three-part dialogue series that creates space for Black women, in the collegiate setting, to gather, grow, and heal. Hosted by Counselor Education graduate student Chanale Propst. | 6pm-7:30pm. Register here.

The ECU Health Sciences Sexual and Gender Diversity Committee (SGDC) at the Brody School of Medicine cordially invite you to a National LGBT Health Awareness Week special event, featuring guest speaker Jessica Pettitt of GoodEnoughNow.com. Jessica is a diversity trainer who blends politics, humor, identity, and local flair with big city passion and energy through direct, individualized, and interactive conversations. March 29 – Cesar Chavez Day. Cesar Chavez Day is a U.S. federal commemorative holiday, proclaimed by President Barack Obama in 2014. The holiday celebrates the birth and legacy of the civil rights and labor movement activist Cesar Chavez. This year the LWCC will celebrate this U.S. hero with speaker and activist Dolores Huerta, who will virtually be speaking to campus. | 6pm. March 30 – From Reconstruction to Reparations: Race, Inequality and Social Movements. This workshop will attempt to link the past to the present moment, specifically highlighting the parallels between the Reconstruction era and the present day to argue there is a need for deep, transformational structural changes in the United States to make racial equity a reality. | 11am. March 31 – Transgender Day of Visibility. Join the Peel LGBTQ Center for a virtual lunch hour to honor transgender voices and experiences and celebrate the courage it takes to live openly and authentically in celebration of Trans Day of Visibility. Trans Pride swag including t-shirts, bracelets, stickers, and pronoun pins will be available for free at the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center.
