Applications open for NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program

The NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program and MD/PhD Partnership Training Programs are now accepting applications. A brief summary of these programs as well as information about our upcoming informational webinars are provided below. Please feel free to share it with your students and university colleagues.

The NIH Oxford-Cambridge (OxCam) Scholars Program is a fully-funded, highly individualized doctoral program for students seeking to pursue a career in biomedical research. OxCam students partner with Investigators at the NIH and the University of Oxford or Cambridge to perform a single, collaborative dissertation project. Since the program is based on the British educational system, OxCam students are able to complete a doctoral degree in approximately four years. Each student divides the time evenly between the two laboratories, with approximately two years at the NIH and two years in the UK.

OxCam Scholars may work with any NIH Intramural Investigator in any research area, as long as the PI is willing to host the students in his/her laboratory. At present, there are approximately 1200 Investigators in the NIH Intramural Program, which enable OxCam Scholars to pursue any type of research he/she desires. Prospective applicants may identify potential NIH mentors by scientific focus area by visiting https://irp.nih.gov/our-research/scientific-focus-areas, or review pre-arranged projects on the OxCam website (https://oxcam.gpp.nih.gov/prospective-students/research-opportunity).

Students interested in pursuing a career as a physician-scientist may pair the NIH OxCam PhD Program with a U.S. medical program via the NIH MD/PhD Partnership Training Program. Since the NIH does not grant MD or PhD degrees, the program partners with U.S. medical schools during the student’s MD phase of training, and with universities in the United States and the UK for the PhD phase of training. Students currently applying to medical school (Track 1) as well as students who are currently enrolled in medical school (Track 2) are eligible to apply.

Please encourage students interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in biomedical science to apply. Applications may be submitted online at www.training.nih.gov/programs/gpp until December 1^st. There is no application fee, and GRE scores are not required. Please note MCAT scores are mandatory for MD/PhD Program applicants.
