Makers Honors Arts Residency Applications Open

The Art Makers is a yearlong visual arts scholarship worth $1000 given only to two Honors College students each year. The art residency features trips to art museums, monthly critiques, and a final exhibition in April.

This scholarship is open to all majors and years. Yes, that’s right–even if you’re a STEM major, you are highly encouraged to apply to diversify the program. For example, Hannah Umphlett, this year’s curator, is a biochemistry major and was a sophomore in the 2020-2021 cohort. Nevertheless, art majors are just as strongly encouraged to apply! We also highly encourage students from traditionally minoritized populations to apply.

Here is some information on the theme and application process 🙂

Residency Theme: “Growth”

This year’s arts residency is a meditation on “Growth.” What does growth mean? How do we witness our own growth? How do we cultivate it? What does it mean to grow–both literally and figuratively? How is growth demonstrated?

Students are encouraged to incorporate an interdisciplinary approach–as long as there is a visual element–to their projects.

Application Requirements:

            • Art project proposal in essay format outlining intended concept, methods, artistic interests, and goals for this experience (must include plans for at least three separate works, i.e. must do at least 3 paintings; essay not to exceed two pages, double spaced, 12pt font)

            • Budget proposal outlining requested supplies (one page, include total required funds not to exceed $250)

            • Supporting materials including sketches and/or other visual documentation of plans for intended project (not to exceed five file uploads). If applicable, include digital portfolio with up to 5 photos of previous work (applicants without digital portfolio will not be penalized)

It is the goal to have the showcase by early to mid April to allow breathing room around exams and hopefully get Jenkins Fine Arts space 🙂
