Cupola Conversation: Gender Equity and Civil Unrest in Iran

CUPOLA CONVERSATIONS – October 6, 2022 at 3:00pm

The Division of Student Affairs, partnering with the Office of Global Affairs, will host the next scheduled Cupola Conversations for the Fall 2022 semester due to recent protests which have erupted in Iran in response to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after having been detained by authorities enforcing strict rules on women’s dress. More than 40 deaths have been reported during the resulting unrest.

Internet blackouts have been implemented by the government in response to the protests and clashes between police and protesters have been reported across the country.

This program is titled “Gender Equity and Civil Unrest in Iran” and will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2022, at 3 p.m. on Microsoft Teams.

This Cupola Conversation will discuss the current state of socio-politics in Iran and how it fits into the wider conversation of gender equity and women’s rights around the globe.

As in previous years, Cupola Conversations will feature a panel of ECU students, faculty, staff, and community members to address these questions and many others. The panelists for this program are:

  • Mona Russell – ECU Department of History / Gender Studies Executive Board
  • Alethia Cook – ECU Department of Political Science
  • Jalil Roshandel – ECU Department of Political Science – Professor Emeritus
  • Neda Safari – ECU Student

Click here on Thursday, October 6 at 3 p.m. to join the conversation.

This Cupola Conversation is open to the entire campus as well as the public, and we encourage all who are committed to creating positive change and leading conversations on civil discourse to be a part of this important event. Participants will be able to type in questions as part of the conversation (Note: Not all questions and comments will be included in the program).
