Evelyn Gonzalez came to ECU because of the Honors College and the opportunities that she was provided to succeed as a student. She has taken advantage of opportunities on and off campus, including being a Copeland Fellow and doing an internship with SAS this past summer.

Coming to ECU, Evelyn knew that she wanted to major in business but had no idea what path she would take. When she started taking introductory courses, she realized that she was good at accounting and enjoyed it. This influenced her to major in business administration and, more specifically, accounting.

To explore accounting in a real-world setting, she started an internship with SAS in January 2022 as a full-time intern until spring semester began. She is now currently a part-time intern in the finance department, working in the accounting group. More specifically, she works with the general ledger team, where she writes monthly journal entries, reconciliations, amortizations, and accruals. One of the most impactful parts of her internship was the instruction she was given regarding SAS going public. She said, “We have learned new ways to make journal entries, read financial statements, and how to be IPO-ready. It has allowed me to gain experience and knowledge that I would not be able to receive anywhere else.”

Aside from her internship last year, she was a part of the first cohort of Copeland Fellows. As a Copeland Fellow, she promotes and learns about diversity, inclusion, and equity in different places like ECU. She said, “Being a fellow at the university has been an honor for me.”

In her free time, Evelyn likes to cook, go to concerts and spend time with her large family (she has 50 cousins)!
