“Robo-Sacer Resistance and Feminicide: Gabriela Damián Miravete’s ‘Soñarán en el jardín’ [They will dream in the garden] and Carlos Carrera and Sabina Berman’s Backyard/El traspatio.”

This presentation looks at how different writers and cineasts in Mexico have used ideas and tropes from science fiction and horror to speak out against violence against women throughout the country. Building on the term “robo sacer,” Dalton theorizes a means through which characters in both of these works use technology to call into question those assumptions that have historically relegated women to the periphery.

Why did we choose to invite Dr. Dalton?

Dr. Dalton’s field of expertise is Latin American cultural studies, analyzing cultures through the lens of popular fiction and film. He has published widely on US-Mexican border literature, Feminism, Latinx literature, the intersections between science, medicine and literature, Latin American science fiction, and even Latin American healthcare systems. He has literally published from A to Z, from apocalyptic fictions to zombie narratives and film. His analyses are always based on the historical circumstances in which the cultural artifacts were produced, and are informed by political, economic and genre theory, among others. He has published two monographs, co-edited two scholarly volumes, and authored twenty articles and eleven book chapters.

Given the breadth of his work, the presentation should be of interest to faculty and students both on the Medical campuses and the Main Campus.
