Dr. Sinan Sousan in the Department of Public Health is seeking 4 students in the Honor’s College to assist with three projects (two students for each project):

  1. Laboratory Quantification of Electronic Cigarette Exposure Using Reference and Low-Cost Aerosol Instruments

Position Description: Quantifying electronic cigarette exposure in a laboratory study. Tasks will include operating aerosol sensors to measure secondhand vaping. Students will learn how to prepare the sensors, perform filter analysis, install and remove the sensors from the vehicles, download and organize the data, and perform data analysis and show results.

  • Fall Season Environmental Evaluation of Low-cost Aerosol Sensors Compared to Reference Instrument

Position Description: A research study that compares multiple low-cost aerosol sensors to a reference instrument for outdoor settings in Greenville, NC. Tasks will include operating aerosol sensors to measure environmental exposure. Students will learn to operate a reference aerosol sensor, and low-cost sensors, perform filter analysis, download and organize the data, perform data analysis and show results. The project will be performed in collaboration with the Department of Technology Systems, College of Engineering and Technology.

Work Schedule:

These projects will take place in Fall 2023 through Spring 2024. Students will be expected to work approximately 12 hours per week in fulfillment of Honor’s Research Project requirements. Students may complete 3 credit hours in Fall 2023 and 3 credit hours in Spring 2023 pending reappointment by the Principal Investigator based on evaluation of the student’s performance.

Aerosol Research Laboratory in the Carol Belk Building, Department of Health Education and Promotion.
