Intro to Pharma Industry Special Topics course - online

Hi Young Chemists, Biologists, Engineers, and Accountants and Statisticians and Project Managers and Anyone Else that might be interested in the pharmaceutical industry,

Pharma is booming in NC (3rd best location in the US!!), the pay/benefits are very nice, and the companies have literally asked ECU to help prepare you for a variety of pharmaceutical industry careers. This means every role it takes to make a pharma company operate. It’s a good time to be entering the pharma workforce!!!

My apologies for the last-minute announcement but better late than have you miss your opportunity this semester!  Also excuse me if you get this info from multiple directions. I am casting a wide net for the common good. (ha!)

We are offering a 1-credit hour special topics course this Fall (CHEM 5525, Pharmaceutical Industry Lecture(?)) that is just the lecture portion of the Pharmaceutical Industry Skills Laboratory (CHEM 4522) without the lab. The lecture material is available in-person and online for ease of access. If you prefer to attend the in-person lectures they will be on Wednesdays from 1-1:50 pm. [In SciTech 346 NOT Bate as listed.] An example syllabus from last year is attached for prospective. I don’t have the current one handy.

Don’t be intimidated by the letters CHEM. The lecture portion is not about chemistry; it is an introduction to important general topics in the pharma industry. There are no prerequisites and it is open to any registered ECU student. It’s also a relatively easy course that will help your resume stand out when applying for positions with our regional pharma industry partners.

Most of the lectures are led by speakers from Catalent and Thermo Fisher Scientific here in Greenville and Novo Nordisk in Clayton. In addition to the good information, it is an opportunity to meet and talk to real working pharmaceutical professionals that want to help you find the right career fit in the pharma industry.

The pharmaceutical industry prospective is also useful for students with plans for pharmacy, dental, and medical school. It is also useful for those of you that really want to take the full class with lab, CHEM 4522, but can’t fit it into your schedule before graduation.

The course info is below for CHEM 5525. Its CRN 83570 and 83572 for face-to-face and online versions, respectively.

Contact Sharon Ermolowich, ermolowichs17@ecu.edu, with any questions about CHEM 5525.

I am also available to discuss pharma career opportunities and pathways to get there. Attached are a few example pharma career positions by college and major to help you see how your interests may align with a pharma career!  (Thanks to Lauren LaMantia, Assistant Director & Counselor, Career Services, College of Engineering and Technology.)

PS: If you are a chemistry or biology major, you should consider the full class with lab (CHEM 4522). Prerequisite is Quantitative and Instrumental Analysis. If you are a science graduate student you can take the graduate version, CHEM 6622. If it shows full, contact me and we will get more space added.
