May 2025 Australian Sport & Culture Study Abroad

This program explores Australian Sport & Culture and is designed for graduate and undergraduate students interested in the global sport and health industry. Students will gain knowledge learn from university professors  at three different universities. Additionally, students will benefit from visiting with several industry professionals over the course of the program.  By participating in this program students will develop a thorough understanding of the Australian Model of Sport. Students will learn how federal, state, and local governments in association with National Sporting Bodies and various professional clubs play a leading role in delivering sport programming to the community.  Many Australian sporting organizations and sports clubs operate as not-for-profit entities and play a pivotal role in the delivery of sport to the community.

Academics

Students will receive 6 credits for participating in this study abroad program. 

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES:

  • RCSC 4002 Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration (3 credits)
  • RCSC 4903/SMGT 4903/HRNS 2116 Special Topics: Sport Organization and Culture in Australia  (3 credits)  

GRADUATE COURSES:

  • RCSC/SMGT 6500 Capstone Experience: Comparative Sport: International Aspects (3 credits )
  • RCSC 6803/SMGT6803 Special Topics: Sport Organization and Culture in Australia (3 credits )

Costs

STUDY ABROAD ADMINISTRATIVE FEE: $75

Planned Highlights

  • Students will stay in hotels in Sydney, 2-3 students per room, and in hotels in Cairns, 2-4 students per room. Quad rooms will have two bathrooms.

  • Visit an Aussie Zoo where you can have photos taken holding a koala & baby crocodile, pet and feed kangaroos, see free flight bird and crocodile shows, as well as hundreds of other native Australian animals
  • Entry to an Aboriginal Cultural Centre: Enjoy lessons throwing a boomerang & playing the didgeridoo as well as learn a little about Aboriginal culture, traditional foods, medicines, etc.
  • Guided tour in the rainforest onboard an Amphibious WWII US Army Duck. Discover the wonders of the rainforest on this Guided Tour, where you’ll traverse the lush landscape onboard an amphibious WWII US Army Duck.   • Full Day Great Barrier Reef Excursion (7:30am-5pm): lunch, wetsuit and snorkeling equipment are included (one introductory scuba dive included). Embark on a day tour to the Great Barrier Reef, where you’ll explore one of the world’s most magnificent natural wonders. Enjoy snorkeling or diving among vibrant coral reefs teeming with diverse marine life, and take in the breathtaking underwater scenery.
