Research Assistant in Dr. Alam's Lab
Brief Discussion of Dr. Alam’s Project:
Green roofs, one of many low-impact developments (LID) and green infrastructure initiatives, are vegetated roofs, or eco-roofs, which are multi-beneficial structural components that help to mitigate the effects of urbanization on water quantity and quality by filtering, absorbing, or detaining rainfall. Significant aspects of this green roof-enhanced climate change mitigation research are finding the right combination of native plant species, effective instrumentation, and efficient soil/substrate combinations of different depths and types. This interdisciplinary research is a preliminary initiative to establish comprehensive green roof research facilities at East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. Initially, the students will help Dr. Alam by developing literature reviews and research methodologies. They will also help to establish outdoor green roof facilities at ECU and conduct pilot studies about urban flood management through green roofs and/or the mental health benefits associated with green roofs.
Student Assistant Duties will include the following:
1. Students should be in Greenville most of the time during the fall 2024.
2. Students are expected to work an average of 10 hrs/week and to spend ~3 hours per week (excluding university holiday week) in the research lab (RAWL ANNEX, Main Campus) preparing literature reviews. Students can fix their own ~3-hour/week lab time according to their class schedule or convenience.
3. Students may need to work outdoors at ECU West Research Campus occasionally.
4. Help develop literature reviews on green roofs and/or mental health benefits associated with green roofs.
5. Students from the fields of design, urban planning, environmental design, planning, low-impact/sustainable construction, construction management, biology, soil science, engineering, psychology and any related department are encouraged to apply.
Apply on ECU Jobs.
