Honors Art Makers 2026-2027 Application Information
What is the Makers Program?
The Makers Program is a year-long, paid residency program within the ECU Honors College that gives Honors students from all majors the opportunity to create visual or performance artworks, and act as Honors College arts ambassadors. These students will be provided with resources and connections to grow their craft as artists and learn more about the artistic process as a whole.
Requirements
Makers will be required to create and show at least three artworks of any media inspired by this year’s theme, “Materialism.” They will be given two opportunities to display their work to the public, both of which are required:
- Fall Makers Showcase: artists will show three pieces, comprised of one piece created for the residency, along with two other personal pieces (not necessarily related to the theme — they may be works made prior to the residency).
- Makers Final Showcase: this is a special event hosted specifically for the Makers to display their hard work! During this showcase, Makers will present all three of their required works produced for the residency, and an artist statement alongside their works.
Along with these showcases, Makers will be required to attend an Inspiration Trip to the Greenville Museum of Art and participate in a service activity where they will aid in teaching an art class.
All Makers must participate in regular meetings with the curator, Annika Rogov, for critiques and advice. She will be your guide when you need help with the artistic planning process, art creation, and art presentation. Some of these meetings will be group meetings, but many will be one-on-one as the year progresses.
Group meetings will be held in person at Mamie Jenkins for group critique sessions, to discuss upcoming events, or offering guidance and advice once you start writing an artist statement. One-on-one meetings will be scheduled every other week throughout the year. The day of the week these meetings are held will be decided based on when it is most convenient for both your schedule and Annika’s, and may be rescheduled if needed with advanced notice, or an unforeseen conflict. One-on-one meetings are typically short, taking no more than 10–15 minutes.
Finally, each Maker must leave one of their works with the Honors College to be displayed in Mamie Jenkins once their residency is completed. For fine artists, this will mean leaving a physical work. For performing artists, this will be photos and a video of you performing at least one of your pieces.
Payment
Once you are accepted as a Maker, you will receive an email sometime over the summer or beginning of the school year detailing how you will receive your payment. Please be on the lookout for this information. It is important that you complete the given materials in a timely fashion in order to receive any money.
The Makers Program is a paid residency program, meaning that the artists are compensated for their work and time. Makers will receive a $500 stipend in the early part of the fall semester. Funding is intended to cover expenses incurred during your time in the Makers Program. Each Maker is expected to meet all program requirements. Failure to complete the required work might result in reimbursement of funds received.
If You Are Selected
Now what? First, the curator Annika Rogov will contact you to exchange information. She will collect your availability to plan a group introductory meeting, and to plan virtual meetings for over the summer. During these meetings, Annika will answer any lingering questions you have about the program and its requirements. She will also help you get started on thinking about your pieces. You are not required to begin your pieces until the beginning of the fall semester, but you should use your summer wisely to start planning. Planning is an important step in crafting good work! Official Makers events will begin in late August or early September. Further dates can be viewed below.
