Sept. 16, 23, 30 – Walking Wednesdays. The Brody School of Medicine’s Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is hosting Walking Wednesday’s every Wednesday for the month of September. Sept. 16, 23, 30 – Coffee House Group is an informal weekly psychoeducational and social gathering for students. Through group discussion and engaging activities, weekly meetings aim to build community while learning about topics impacting LGBTQ students and Allies in a safe and supportive environment. Sept. 15, 22, 29 – What’s the Tea? What’s the Tea? is a weekly series that encourages civil discourse on various hot topics within society. Participants are encouraged to share their different perspectives virtually at the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center, a safe place for all Pirates. Sept. 16 – Reel Talk: “100 Humans: Are You Biased?” Reel Talk is a monthly series which provides participants the opportunity to discuss and debate various social justice and related topics portrayed through film in a safe and educational environment. | 6pm, register on Engage to receive WebEx link.
Sept. 16 – Get CulturED. Get CulturED is a series aimed at providing education surrounding various cultural identities. Each event will focus and explore a different culture, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the culture and leave with a better understanding and appreciation of the highlighted culture. | 6pm, register on Engage to receive WebEx link.
Sept. 17 – Democracy Now! Constitution Day Edition. Democracy Now! is program focusing on breaking news and headlines. You will hear a diverse selection of voices speaking from various perspectives, providing a unique and sometimes provocative perspective on global events. Sept. 18 – Feminist Friday. Feminist Friday is a recurring event every other Friday with the Women and Gender Office. This is a time to talk about an event or topic that is relevant in today’s society. Sept. 21 – Bi and Proud. Join the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center for a celebration of Bisexual Awareness Week with a panel discussion exploring bisexual pride and the visibility of the bisexual community. | 5pm, register on Engage to receive WebEx link.
Sept. 21 – Barbershop Talks. Barbershop Talks is a leadership series that helps male-identified students from underrepresented backgrounds connect and share experiences. Seeking to mirror the realism experienced in a traditional barbershop, it provides a place for conversation and dialogue about the challenges and resources available to males of color. Sept. 22 – What’s Your Medicine? …Academic Medicine vs. Hospitalist vs. Private Practice vs. Community Medicine Virtual Panel. Sept. 24 – In Living Color: Journalism in the Age of Black Lives Matter. What is the role of the media in the time of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Jacob Blake? Join the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center as we explore the relationship between the media and marginalized communities. Exploring both the coverage and experiences of people of color, this discussion will examine, from both a personal and professional lens of media insiders, the relationship between the press and social activism. | 3pm, register on Engage to receive WebEx link.
Sept. 29 – “Language Gaps and the Roles of Interpreters in Healthcare.” This event is hosted by the Brody School of Medicine LMSA (Latino Medical Students Association). Presenters: Nicole Tavarez and Stephanie Wiley Cork. Sept. 29 – Women of Distinction Awards. Every two years, ECU honors at least 5 women (faculty, staff, students, or community members) with the Women of Distinction Award. Started by the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Women, this important event continues on, led by the Women and Gender Office. We are proud to feature Paula Dance, the first Black woman to serve as a Sheriff in the state of North Carolina, as our keynote speaker for this virtual event! | 12:30pm, register on Engage to receive WebEx link.
Sept. 29 – Disrupting Bias: Using Emotional Intelligence to Uncover Bias and Leverage Change. Join the Office for Equity and Diversity (OED) and Dr. Yoshi Newman as we explore our emotional response when we become aware of our own biases and learn how to experience our emotions as valuable information that can advance personal and societal change. | 3pm, register on Cornerstone to receive Zoom link.
