Summer 2021 Study Abroad in Spain & Morocco

This message is sent on behalf of Dr. Slava in the Department of Mathematics.

Dear students,

I’m excited to announce our plans for a travel/study opportunity that will bring our learning to life in Spain and Morocco this summer.  I will be leading an ECU Summer Study Abroad Program “In Escher’s Footsteps: mathematics and the art of the regular division of the plane (mosaics, tilings, tessellations)”.  This program will be of interest to anyone who is interested in mathematics and/or the art, and if you are interested in neither, well, this program may just change that for the rest of your life!

Our world has never been smaller, and I believe traveling is crucial to your education. Our itinerary will be a mix of cultural, hands-on, and educational activities and of course a lot of fun, too! Some highlights include:

  • Visits to seven Unesco World Heritage Sites (four sites in Spain and three in Morocco)
  • Artisanal Workshop on creating Zellige tiles in Fes, Morocco
  • A tour of Gibraltar and a ferry crossing of the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain to Morocco

Please, check out our itinerary, full details and a quick application on our online portal:

  • A video description of the program: https://youtu.be/jk30IgjulY8

This truly is a unique opportunity for a life-changing experience, the kind of learning experience you’ll talk about long after graduation. It will ignite or deepen a life-long interest in and appreciation of mathematics and art, as well as appreciation of cultures very different from ours.

I will hold an informational session on Wednesday, January 20, 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm (see the invitation and the link at the bottom of this message).  Please, join me to learn more about the program and how to join it.

The participants of the program will receive ECU undergraduate or graduate course credits.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at archavas@ecu.edu

I’m looking forward to traveling and learning with many of you!
