2021-22 Makers Honors Arts Residency Applications Open

The Makers Honors Arts Residency

2021-2022 Application Instructions

Program Description:

This year-long paid residency gives Honors students from all majors the opportunity to make artwork and act as an Honors College ambassador of the arts. Honors students from diverse academic backgrounds will focus on process vs. presentation and creative concept development. Selected students will receive a one-time $750 stipend plus $250 supplies, monthly critiques and mentorship from the residency curator and an art faculty member, and a final exhibition of their projects.

Residency Theme:

This year’s arts residency is a meditation on “Humanity”. What is humanity? What does it mean to be human? How does it feel to be human? Is the human experience the same for everyone? Is it different for different people (how so)? How are we all similar? How are we all different? What defines us? How is humanity demonstrated? What does humanity look like on a small scale (a few people), what does it look like on a larger scale (a population)? These and any other questions concerning “Humanity” may be considered and explained in the student’s project. Students are encouraged to incorporate an interdisciplinary approach (any medium as long as there is at least one visual element) to their projects.

Application Requirements:

  • Art project proposal in essay format outlining intended concept, methods, artistic interests, and goals for this experience (must include plans for at least three separate works, i.e. must do at least 3 paintings; essay not to exceed two pages, double spaced, 12pt font)
  • Budget proposal outlining requested supplies (one page, include total required funds not to exceed $250)
  • Supporting materials including sketches and/or other visual documentation of plans for intended project (not to exceed five file uploads). If applicable, include digital portfolio with up to 5 photos of previous work (applicants without digital portfolio will not be penalized)
