URM Summer Research Internship Program 2022

The Rangos Research Center at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh serves as the hub of pediatric research in Pittsburgh and is one of the fastest growing pediatric research programs in the United States. Whether advancing immunosuppressant management to wean transplant patients from anti-rejection drugs or seeking a cure for juvenile asthma, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is expanding research frontiers with new and innovative therapies for the cure of childhood disease and disability. 

Under the direction of Drs. Juan C. Celedón, Sunder Sims-Lucas and Michelle Manni, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh offers an eight-week paid summer internship program designed for underrepresented minority undergraduate students from any college or university who wish to learn the rationale, design strategies, methods, and other aspects of biomedical research by engaging in studies related to the heart, lung, and blood fields under the direct supervision of experienced researchers. 

Program Eligibility:

  • US citizen or permanent resident (green card holding)
  • underrepresented minority
  • students must be enrolled in a degree-granting program at a college/university
  • cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • have completed at least two semesters of undergraduate education
  • have at least one semester of undergraduate education remaining after completing CHP program or documentation of acceptance into an advanced degree program for fall 2022

Applications for the 2022 program will be available online at www.chp.edu in early January 2022. Credentials from all eligible participants are reviewed by the mentors through the selection process. Selected participants are notified in April of their acceptance into the program. The 2022 program will commence in June and conclude at the end of July with the annual “Poster Day” forum. Participants are expected to complete the 8-week program working 40 hours per week and will receive compensation of approximately $4,000. Housing is provided with this program.
