Call for Bassman Award - excellence in research & writing

The Michael F. Bassman Honors College Research Award was established in 2010 to recognize excellence in research and writing by students in the ECU® Honors College. The award, in the amount of $500, is sponsored by Academic Library Services.

Honors College theses/projects successfully submitted in Summer 2024, December 2024 or Spring 2025 are eligible. Award entries must be submitted by March 14, 2025. For submission instructions, an email attachment should be sent to Bryna Coonin at cooninb@ecu.edu.

A cover sheet must accompany the paper, containing:

  • Student’s name
  • Local and/or permanent addresses
  • Local and/or permanent telephone numbers
  • Email address
  • Advisor’s name
  • Statement giving permission to post the paper/project on the Joyner Library website, and to deposit the thesis in The ScholarShip, the ECU Institutional Repository

Entries will be judged on the quality of the research and the quality of the writing. The award recipient will be a student in the Honors College and exemplify the ideals of the Honors College — strong character, intellectual curiosity and a commitment to academic success.

Theses/research projects must be submitted by the student’s thesis/project adviser, with the student’s permission. The adviser should also submit a paragraph attesting to the quality of the work and the student’s exemplification of the Honors College ideals. Additional letters of faculty support may be submitted, but are not required. For additional details and submission requirements visit Joyner Library’s Bassman Award website.

The winner will be notified by April 1, 2025, and will receive a cash award of $500. The winner also will be recognized at the Honors College Medallion Ceremony in April, 2025.
