Mobile Sensorimotor Testing Research Study Seeking Volunteers!

The Visual Motor Laboratory is seeking volunteers to participate in a research study investigating the effect of soccer heading on sensorimotor integration.

What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of this study is to develop a mobile testing unit (MTU) to quickly assess sensorimotor integration function following exposure to repetitive sub-concussive head impacts, like those experienced with soccer heading. The creation of an MTU will allow for the identification of impairment outside of a lab or clinic, such as in sport or military settings, following head impacts.

Who is eligible to participate?

We are seeking adults ages 18-50 who:

  • Currently play, or have played within the past two years, organized soccer
  • Have no diagnosed concussions within the past year
  • Have no history of neurological pathology that interferes with balance, vision, or hearing
  • Have no lower extremity injuries within the past three months

Participation in this research is voluntary and if you choose to participate, you may withdraw your consent at any time during the study.

What can I expect if I choose to participate?

Data collection will occur in the Visual Motor Laboratory, located in Minges Coliseum (Room 81), and practice soccer field at East Carolina University. Each visit will last approximately 1 hour. Participants will be asked to complete a survey regarding their soccer playing experience and then will be asked to wear an EEG cap during completion of a series of eye tracking and balance tasks. Participants will complete six vision tasks while seated using a virtual reality (VR) headset. Following completion of the vision tasks, balance will be assessed during a series of quiet-standing tasks using special insoles placed in the shoes to measure force and pressure distribution. Three of the tasks will involve wearing the VR headset. Participants will then complete a soccer heading drill and then be re-tested on the eye tracking and balance tasks.

Will I be compensated for my participation?

Yes! Participants will receive a $20 Walmart gift card for their participation.

Who do I contact if I have questions or am interested in participating in this survey?

Complete the qualification survey and have a study investigator reach out to you or reach out directly to Brittany Trotter at trotterb20@students.ecu.edu.
